The Tyranny of Our Wants
Wayne is off to South Africa and before he left he started a discussion with Brad about our endless fascination with speculation and controversy, in sports as well as in theology and human relationships. And those keep us from living in the adventure of learning to discern him and follow him in each unfolding moment. Instead of speculating on what God should do to make me happy, we can discover what he is doing, even in the pains and trials of life in a broken world.

This is a blessed God Journey pod cast…..thanks for putting into words things that are happening in my life…..you are truly showing Gods love for His children by sharing with the world how God works in your lives, and thanks for sharing the good and not so good stuff because that is what makes it real, and people on this journey with you can relate with you when you make it real….I love you guys in Christ……your sister in the Lord….. I live in Brazil , and i have 21 years old, i have just finished the book ” So you don´t want to go to church anymore”,so i discovered the website!!! I loved the way you talk about God!!! tanks for all!!!!
I’ve just started listening to you guys in the past week, and can identify with so much of what I’ve heard. I enjoying the programs, and my own God Journey.
As a homeschooling mom , I’ve seen Christians (me included) focus much on producing godly character in their dc, and a couple yrs ago it hit me that the fruit we are to produce isn’t actually our own fruit but that of Holy Spirit. As long as we continue to work on producing good character (via our own good works )in ourselves and our offspring, we do have something to brag about when we apparently seem to have all our ducklings in a row. But then all of a sudden we see those old issues rear their ugly heads when under pressure, and we see the futility of our efforts because they really are just a (usually) clean pot on the outside but is still full of grime and sin on the inside .
But I think when we are focused on abiding and resting in the Truth and keeping focus on relationship with Him, then Holy Spirit produces good and everlasting fruit in us and He gets the glory, and we are amazed because He’s made changes in us where we know we can take none of the credit.
After writing in my journal yesterday of how disappointed I am with how my life has gone, how nothing I ever desired has come to fruition and how I had no idea where to go, what to do, how to live with such disappointment, I hear this podcast of The Tyranny of (my) Wants.
The quote that especially hit me was Wayne saying (changed to a prayer for my life): “Make me free of the tyranny of my own expectation of God for my own life”
Reading The Message; 1 Peter 4:1,2 was of great value also and put it into words I ‘get’.
Weeks go by without my listening to the podcasts, then I am prompted with a reminder and it’s exactly what I need to hear at that time.
Sometimes the way you phrase things or the attitude in which you say things is a bit brutal to a wounded heart, but it’s the truth underlying it which God wants me to hear and I’m grateful for that.
Blessings to you both for slinging truth & encouragement my way even when it comes as a huge life challenge!
